The proposal aims to achieve carbon neutrality for the Sud des Faubourgs neighborhood. The team develops efficient buildings in terms of energy, by using efficient insulators, green roofs, and producing green energies on the site. There is a meticulous choice of building materials, choosing bio-based materials that can be produced close to the site in order to reduce carbon footprint. 

The team wants to energize the neighborhood from a socio-economic point of view by creating pockets of economic activity and social gathering places.  The project consists of a pavilion that provides a warm space during winter, greenhouse structures that offer bars and street food. The intervention also includes the construction of a dome structure with warm indoors and benefits of solar radiation. All the design choices respect the identity of the place and take into account the specific climate of Montreal.

• Create a sustainable neighborhood that aims for carbon neutrality through building efficiency, renewable energy, enhancing active and low carbon mobility, short circuits products and improving waste management. 

• Valorise the built and natural landscape: valorise heritage buildings, restore access to the river, create parks and public green spaces and requalify the waterfront. 

• Boost local economy and social life by creating economic activities, artists hubs, and cultural spaces.

Presentation of the site 

The Faubourgs area is located east of downtown Montreal, close to the central business district. Its rich history and complex identity stretch back to the city's industrial boom in the 19th century. The southern part of this area bears the marks of the major urban redevelopment and highway construction that took place between 1950 and 1980, and led to the demolition of large swathes of the old neighbourhoods previously located there.

The City of Montreal now wishes to seize a unique opportunity to redevelop this area, following the closure of the Molson-Coors Brewery -one of Canada's oldest industries- and the relocation of Maison de Radio-Canada, and to correct major disruption left by previous urban development projects. With this in mind, the City of Montreal has undertaken a major planning exercise, with the aim of re-establishing links between this neighbourhood and the river, Old Montreal and the eastern part of downtown.

The object is to make the most of the structure of the historic Faubourgs neighbourhoods, to develop a model project for the eco-friendly transition of these industrial and institutional wastelands. The project will aim to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and inspire an environmentally-friendly lifestyle.




Approx. site area
The site covers a total of approximately 20 hectares, including Molson-Coors Brewery (12 ha) and the Radio-Canada ile (7 ha).
