The proposed transformation concerns two buildings initially designed as a primary school and a gymnasium, along with an adjacent open area, located in the southeastern district of Milan
The surrounding context in which the area is situated is undergoing numerous urban regeneration initiatives, either in the planning stages or underway. To the west of the railway that runs along Via Zama is the Ex-Macello area, a site in competition from a previous Reinventing Cities edition and a future location of housing, services, social and work functions, as well as ‘Mercato Ortofrutticolo’ (Fruit and Vegetable Market), which is currently being redeveloped. The district, located between the Porta Vittoria and S. Giulia hubs, is the focus of relevant urban regeneration initiatives.
Situated within the Forlanini district, it features a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial elements, complemented by sports facilities, schools, and various services. It is served by the M4 underground line, Forlanini stop, which was recently built and complements the existing system of surface transport lines. The site is accessible from a public road, includes utilities, is urbanised and adequately equipped. The site is flat and characterised by the presence of dense trees that have grown over the years within the green courtyard. The transformation must favour a functional and social mix, striving towards goals of environmental and urban requalification; it should prioritize innovative technical and design solutions in terms of carbon reduction, circular economy, and climate change adaptation.
Expected Land Use:
An urban regeneration project should be planned for the entire area, aimed at enhancing both the environmental and social value, by repurposing the existing urban-building fabric. The transformation should accommodate university and social housing, as well as spaces for supplementary uses and functions. The project will prioritize the creation of urban green spaces and connected services, promoting social inclusion and a sustainable lifestyle.

“In its fourth Reinventing Cities participation, the City of Milan will test joint interventions with Agenzia del Demanio, the national Public Property Agency, focusing on student and social housing. This is key to enhance local cooperation among stakeholders at all levels for the acceleration of Milan’s transition towards a more inclusive, green and liveable urban environment.” Mayor of Milan and C40 Vice Chair for Europe, Giuseppe Sala
