Reinventing Cities Belo Horizonte: a new urban park for the city

The Reinventing Cities Belo Horizonte competition invites multidisciplinary teams to propose the transformation of a strategic site into a new Urban Park. The objective is to convert a former environmental liability into a valuable urban asset, creating a sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient public space.

Site location

Located in the city’s Northwest region, the competition site corresponds to the former BR-040 Solid Waste Treatment Facility, which operated for more than three decades and has been inactive since 2007.

With approximately 38 hectares allocated to the project, the site represents a significant urban regeneration opportunity—transforming previously degraded land into a high-quality, green, and accessible space.

A park for people and for the climate

Situated in a densely populated area with a shortage of green spaces, the future park will play a strategic role in expanding publicly accessible open space and improving the quality of life for surrounding communities.

Proposals should integrate leisure, sports, and social interaction with environmental restoration, landscape enhancement, active mobility, and social inclusion, responding to the specific characteristics of the site.

Guidelines for a new model of public space

The project seeks to incorporate contemporary urban planning principles, with a strong emphasis on green infrastructure, Nature-based Solutions, and climate change adaptation. More than a park, the proposal is envisioned as a tool for urban regeneration, delivering long-term environmental and social benefits.

With the possibility of phased implementation and an estimated budget exceeding BRL 50 million, the project represents a key step in Belo Horizonte’s urban transformation—reimagining a former landfill as a high-quality and inclusive public space.

Development and implementation of proposals

Teams will be required to submit proposals at a preliminary design stage, including an urban concept, environmental strategies, and design solutions, demonstrating technical, social, and economic feasibility.

In addition to prizes for the top three ranked teams, the winning team may be commissioned to develop the executive design required for the park’s future implementation by the municipality.

The local official launch of the competition is expected in the coming months, when the call for proposals, detailed timeline, and participation guidelines will be released. Stay tuned!

Plot area:
The park will cover approximately 38 hectares, surrounding the restricted area of the former landfill’s solid waste mass. The intervention area has been subdivided into eight project sub-areas.

Site ownership:

Municipality of Belo Horizonte
