Students explore climate challenges at Chicago’s Trumbull Park Homes

As part of the C40 Students Reinventing Cities competition, students visited Trumbull Park Homes on Chicago’s Far South Side, in the South Deering neighbourhood, to explore the site’s history, environmental challenges and community priorities. Hosted in partnership with the Chicago Housing Authority, the visit brought together students and local stakeholders for a focused, on-the-ground learning experience.

During the site visit on 10 April 2026, participants gained direct insight into key issues affecting the area, including flooding, heat vulnerability and neighbourhood infrastructure.  With participation from the Chicago Housing Authority, Trumbull Park Homes staff and the Department of Energy, students were able to better understand both the challenges and opportunities shaping the site, helping to strengthen their design proposals.

As students continue developing their projects ahead of the final submission deadline on 28 May 2026, the competition encourages nature-based, zero-carbon and resilient strategies. Grounded in real conditions and community needs, the proposals aim to contribute to a more resilient and equitable future for residents.
