Congratulations to the winning ideas which included designing a school that stays cool even on the hottest days to combat the increasing danger of extreme heat in the city.


See the winning students ideas on the Level Up Los Angeles website. LAUSD's two-level Minecraft Education Esports Competition sought solutions to the impacts of climate emergencies affecting Los Angeles. Congratulations to Junior League Winner Climate Justices and Varsity League Winners Blazing BEVA Builders. 



The Challenge

The winning students were asked to consider how extreme heat has an increasing and dangerous impact on Los Angeles and exacerbates other climate issues. They designed solutions to: 

 As temperatures rise and heatwaves become more frequent and intense, we face serious challenges to our health and environment, especially in vulnerable communities. Your task is to design a school that stays cool even on the hottest days. Consider how schools are currently built and design a school that is heat resilient and incorporates nature-based solutions.


The Celebration

Winning students designed their ideas in real time in the esports finale on extreme heat, having been the highest scoring teams from previous challenges on air pollution and water stress. The jury included LAUSD and the LA Climate Emergency Mobilisation Office. 


“A study showed extreme heat can raise kids' risk of having respiratory problems. This is why we used white walls and roofing to keep our school heat resistant” Climate Justices, winning student team explained.
