Update
The team Kyklos has been selected as a finalist of Phase 1 of the competition. Their proposal, R-innova, el Hub Inclusivo, will now be further developed for Phase 2.
Phase 1 Finalist Team: Kyklos
Project Overview
The Kyklos proposal integrates strategies of economy, innovation, sustainable design, waste recovery and labour inclusion. It envisions a collaborative and productive hub that combines workspaces, urban facilities and environmental infrastructure. A key pillar is the active engagement with the local community, generating social, economic and environmental benefits at both local and metropolitan levels.
The project aims to prevent over 3,000 tonnes of waste per year from reaching landfills and to create approximately 100 inclusive jobs.
Key Components & Solutions:
- - Innovation Centre: A triple-impact hub offering workspaces, multipurpose rooms and support for circular economy projects.
- Inclusive Centre R: A space for job inclusion of people with cognitive disabilities in waste sorting, textile reuse and utensil cleaning.
- Biodigester: Local-scale infrastructure to process organic waste into biogas and fertilizer.
- Reusable Packaging Refill Centre: Bulk cleaning product distribution, reducing single-use packaging and promoting responsible consumption.
- Timber Structure Workshop: Small-scale laminated wood construction, generating local jobs and training opportunities.
The team will now advance to Phase 2 of the competition. This page will be updated with further information as the competition progresses.
Site Description
The district has more than 600 companies that play a key role in the local development of the commune, concentrating industrial, manufacturing and logistics activities that benefit from the strategic location of the district in the metropolitan system of the city of Santiago, located close to highways, the international airport and just 10 minutes from the most important business centers of the city. The site is a municipally owned piece of land that the local government is making available as part of a sustainable economic development agenda that considers productive linkage strategies and public-private partnerships to accelerate the economic transformation and urban, social and environmental development of Renca.
Within this site, an area has been defined exclusively dedicated to promoting the development of entrepreneurship, seeking that different businesses with a focus on the circular economy, eco-design and triple impact can grow in Renca, validating technologies and products, establishing agreements with industry and existing companies and contributing to local development with training, employment and their own products, services and technologies. This will require the construction of a newly built infrastructure in which this innovation model can take place.
Expected Land Use:
The proposed project should consist of a laboratory for innovation and entrepreneurship that allows the growth of technological startups. It will serve as a hub for testing innovative technologies and products, with an environmental focus. It will provide a space for startup residency, green jobs and training for the resident community that are aligned with the environmental, social, economic, municipal and urban objectives of the commune. These startups will be encouraged to promote circular economy, eco-design and the revalorisation of waste from industries in the sector, promoting triple impact. The programme should include space for research and development laboratories, training and workforce development programmes, offices and/or workstations, collaborative workspaces and areas for waste/resource pooling with a focus on the circular economy.Type of Property transfer intended:
The city intends to make a long-term concession. The conditions are open to the teams' proposals.
"Renca is proud to partner with C40 in this year’s Reinventing Cities competition, reaffirming our commitment with sustainable urban regeneration of public land, identifying the transformative potential of an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Campus in our commune. It is not only activating a public land in disuse, but also the construction of a node of innovation and entrepreneurship that does not exist in the western part of Santiago, opening opportunities for startups, green jobs, and the promotion of the circular economy." Claudio Castro, Mayor of Renca
