The most sustainable building is the one that never gets built! While too many buildings get demolished because their use and design do not match future needs, adaptative reuse can act as a viable alternative to demolition and reconstruction.

The COVID-19 outbreak has changed the way we live, work and shop and therefore significantly impacted the real estate market, especially with many office buildings and retail spaces becoming underutilized. This new reality may be an opportunity to accelerate the movement towards smarter and more adaptable cities, not only for public spaces, as it has been recently experimented in many cities, but also for buildings.

Paris has a long experience of repurposing buildings – and specifically transforming office buildings into housing – to foster mixed-use and to meet increasing housing demand. The City has also recently set a target for 30 per cent of office buildings to be reversible by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2050.

The webinar will welcome three exceptional speakers:

Dominique Alba
, Director of Paris Urbanism Agency (Apur), will present the actions and policies the City is implementing to accelerate the repurposing of buildings and the development of a reversible and adaptable built environment

Sir David Chipperfield, Director of David Chipperfield Architects, will share his experience of repurposing offices through the presentation of the Morland Mixité Capitale project developed in the context of the Reinventer Paris competition.

Véronique Bédague, Director of Nexity, will share the experience of the Collective for Climate, the winning team of the C40 Reinventing Cities competition in Paris, that developed a plan for Paris' first district made of 100 per cent reversible buildings.

The theme of this webinar is connected to the work C40 is developing through the Reinventing Cities program that transforms underutilized sites in cities into landmark low-carbon and sustainable projects. It is also aligned with the sustainability and resilience objective pursued by C40's Clean Construction Forum and Land Use Planning Network.
