Nearly 700 students developed 160 proposals across 10 participating cities to tackle real urban challenges and shape greener, more thriving neighbourhoods

The fifth edition of Students Reinventing Cities has concluded, marking another successful year of collaboration between cities, universities and young innovators committed to building more sustainable, resilient and inclusive communities.

Since its launch in October 2025, the competition brought together nearly 700 students from 80 universities worldwide. Working in multidisciplinary teams, participants developed 160 proposals for urban regeneration sites across 10 participating cities, demonstrating the programme's growing global reach and the increasing role of youth in shaping climate-responsive urban solutions.

The proposals reflected months of learning, innovation and engagement. Through technical training, site visits and direct dialogue with city officials, community organisations, technical experts and programme partners, students developed creative solutions to real urban regeneration challenges. Their ideas reimagined underutilised urban sites as greener, healthier and more inclusive neighbourhoods, responding to local priorities while helping shape the cities of tomorrow.

Following the submission deadline in May, city-led juries convened between June and August to evaluate proposals and select the winning teams and, where applicable, Honourable Mentions. Bringing together municipal representatives, technical experts, community organisations, programme partners and C40, the jury process reflected the collaborative spirit at the heart of the competition.

The winning teams and Honourable Mentions will be announced in the coming weeks.

Local celebration events and a global communications campaign will showcase this year's ideas and the young innovators behind them, highlighting the role of youth in helping cities accelerate climate action and build more sustainable, resilient and inclusive urban futures.
