On July 26th, Mayor Johnson led the groundbreaking ceremony for Fifth City Commons, an all-electric affordable housing development in East Garfield Park.

Fifth City Commons was a 2019 winning project in the first edition of Reinventing Cities. The project focuses on providing affordable housing close to the Kedzie Avenue Green and Blue Line stations. The all-electric building incorporates sustainable elements in line with Passive House principles and is projected to conclude by late 2024 or 2025!

Fifth City Commons

Fifth City Commons is a new residential community, which lives up to its name not only by generating 100% of its power on-site and processing 100% of its storm water on-site, but also thanks to its resilient design prepared for the future climate change challenges that Chicago will face. The structure will be equipped with rooftop solar panels, providing two-thirds of its energy requirements. The property will also boast mature landscaping, electric vehicle charging stations, on-site stormwater retention, ample bicycle parking, and on-site composting facilities.
